How this 7-day Amsterdam plan works

Amsterdam + Low Countries

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Amsterdam rather than in transit. Trams and metro (GVB) run ~06:00–00:30; contactless card or OV-chipkaart taps in and out. NS trains from Schiphol reach Amsterdam Centraal in 15 min. The canal ring is walkable end-to-end in an hour; bikes are the default local transport and free NDSM/Buiksloterweg ferries cross to Amsterdam Noord.

  Day 1–4 — Full Amsterdam itinerary.

  Day 5 — Utrecht cathedral and canals.

• Day 3

  Day 6 — Bruges day trip (Thalys to Brussels + train, or full-day tour).

• Day 4

  Day 7 — Delft blue-porcelain workshop, farewell rijsttafel dinner.

Where to base yourself

• Grachtengordel (Canal Ring)

  UNESCO 17th-century canals — the postcard Amsterdam base for first-timers.

• Jordaan

  Café-lined canals, independent boutiques, Anne Frank House and the Nine Streets shopping district.

• Museum Quarter

  Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk and Concertgebouw around Museumplein.

• De Pijp

  Multi-cultural, Albert Cuyp Market and modern-Dutch food; great value stays.

Best time to run this itinerary

April–May and September–October give mild 14–20°C days without the July–August peak. Tulip season (Keukenhof) runs mid-March to mid-May. November–February is cold (3–7°C) but atmospheric — Christmas markets, museum quiet and lowest hotel rates.

• Bike lanes (red asphalt) are strictly for cyclists — never walk in them.
