3-day itinerary for Athens

How this 3-day Athens plan works

First-time Athens

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Athens rather than in transit. Metro Line 3 links the airport (ATH) to Syntagma in ~40 min for €9. Three metro lines plus trams and buses cover the centre; a 24h AthenaTicket is €4.10. The historic centre (Plaka, Monastiraki, Acropolis, Syntagma) is walkable end-to-end in 30 minutes. Uber-Taxi and Beat are cheap and metered.

Day by day

  • Day 1

Day 1 — Acropolis 08:00 timed slot, Acropolis Museum, Plaka lunch, Anafiotika sunset.

  • Day 2

Day 2 — Ancient Agora, Roman Forum, Monastiraki flea market, Psyrri rooftop dinner.

  • Day 3

Day 3 — National Archaeological Museum, Kolonaki lunch, Lycabettus Hill sunset.

Where to base yourself

  • Plaka

Neoclassical old quarter under the Acropolis — tavernas, souvenirs and the most photogenic streets.

  • Monastiraki & Psyrri

Flea market, rooftop bars with Acropolis views and the buzziest evening scene.

  • Koukaki

Quiet residential base south of the Acropolis with excellent boutique hotels and cafés.

  • Kolonaki

Upscale designer shopping, Benaki Museum and the smartest cocktail bars.

Best time to run this itinerary

April–early June and September–October give 20–28°C days, blue skies and open-air sightseeing without July–August's 35–40°C heat and cruise-ship crowds. November–March is mild (10–16°C), quiet, and the cheapest — most sites stay open with much shorter queues.

Before you go

  • €30 combined ticket covers 7 major archaeological sites over 5 days — much better value than individual tickets.

  • Metro Line 3 (blue) links airport, Syntagma and Piraeus — pickpocket hotspot; keep bags in front.

  • Tavernas serve lunch 13:30–16:00 and dinner from 20:30 — arriving at 19:00 marks you as a tourist.
