Barcelona 5-Day Itinerary
A realistic 5-day Barcelona itinerary: what to see each day, where to stay, how to move between areas and when to go.
Updated 2026-07-01
How this 5-day Barcelona plan works
Five days adds a Montserrat day trip and enough slack to see Gràcia and Poblenou properly rather than rushing past them. The first three days follow the compact plan; days four and five move outward.
Barcelona + Catalan coast
Where to base yourself for this plan
The Eixample or Gràcia both work well over five nights — central enough for the museum and Gaudí days, with Gràcia adding a genuinely local evening scene.
Day 1: Gaudí and the Eixample
Focus: Eixample
Morning
Sagrada Família on an early slot.
Afternoon
Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia.
Evening
Dinner in the Esquerra de l'Eixample.
Getting between them
L2/L5 metro, then a short walk or hop to Passeig de Gràcia.
Day 2: Gothic Quarter, Born and the beach
Focus: Ciutat Vella and Barceloneta
Morning
Cathedral, Gothic Quarter lanes, La Boqueria market.
Afternoon
Picasso Museum and Santa Maria del Mar, then the beach at Barceloneta.
Evening
Seafood dinner on the Barceloneta harbour.
Getting between them
Mostly on foot, roughly 4–5 km.
Day 3: Montserrat
Focus: Day trip, about an hour north-west
Morning
FGC train from Plaça Espanya, then the cable car or rack railway up to the monastery for the morning boys' choir if the schedule allows.
Afternoon
Walk one of the marked trails around the rock pinnacles, or visit the basilica and museum if you'd rather stay closer to the monastery buildings.
Evening
Back into Barcelona by early evening; a quiet dinner near your base rather than another outing.
Getting between them
FGC combined rail-and-mountain-transport ticket from Plaça Espanya, about an hour each way.
Day 4: Park Güell and Montjuïc
Focus: Gràcia/Carmel and Montjuïc
Morning
Park Güell on an early timed slot.
Afternoon
Montjuïc castle, Fundació Miró and the hillside gardens.
Evening
Magic Fountain if the schedule allows, otherwise dinner in Gràcia.
Getting between them
L3 metro to Park Güell, then bus or taxi to Montjuïc.
Day 5: Gràcia and Poblenou
Focus: Gràcia and Poblenou
Morning
Wander Gràcia's squares and independent shops at an unhurried pace — this is the day without a booked timed entry.
Afternoon
Cross to Poblenou for Rambla del Poblenou, the quieter stretch of beach, and the converted-factory design district around Carrer de Pujades.
Evening
A relaxed final dinner in Poblenou's newer restaurant scene, away from the old-town crowds.
Getting between them
L3 then L4 metro, or the T4 tram along Avinguda Diagonal; roughly 20–25 minutes between the two neighbourhoods.
Adapting this plan
Swap Montserrat for a Costa Brava or Sitges day trip if mountains hold less appeal than coastline — both are similarly reachable by train. Families with young children often do better splitting the Montjuïc day into a half day and adding a second relaxed beach afternoon instead.
Best time to run this itinerary
May–June and September–October give warm 22–28°C days without August's crowds and heat. July–August is hot, humid and busiest (beach season peak). November–March is mild (12–18°C) and rainier, with the lowest hotel rates and easiest museum bookings.
Before you go
Watch for pickpockets on La Rambla and the L3 metro line.
Lunch is served late — most kitchens open 1:30–4pm, dinner from 8:30pm.
Beach clubs in Barceloneta charge cover fees on weekends; book ahead in summer.
Barcelona FAQs
Is Montserrat worth a full day from Barcelona?
Yes for most visitors — the round trip and mountain transport take a meaningful chunk of the day, so treating it as a half day usually means rushing the cable car queues without time on the trails.
Where should I stay for a five-night Barcelona trip?
The Eixample or Gràcia. Both keep the Gaudí and museum days central while Gràcia adds a more residential, less tourist-facing evening scene for the length of a longer stay.
