Getting from the airport into Barcelona

Barcelona–El Prat (BCN) is the city's main airport, 13 km south-west of the centre, with two terminals connected by a free shuttle bus. Budget carriers occasionally use Girona or Reus airports instead, both over an hour from the city and only worth it if the fare saving clearly outweighs the extra transfer time and cost.

Terminal 1 handles most full-service and long-haul carriers; Terminal 2 handles most budget airlines. The free shuttle bus between terminals takes about 10–15 minutes, so build that in if your onward transport departs from the other terminal.

• Aerobús (A1/A2)

  35–40 minutes to Plaça Catalunya. Around €6–11 one way depending on ticket type. Best for most travelers — direct, frequent, and drops you in the heart of the Eixample.

• R2 Nord train (Rodalies)

  About 25 minutes to Barcelona Sants, continuing to Passeig de Gràcia. Around €4–5 one way. Best for budget-conscious travelers and anyone based near Sants or the Eixample.

• L9 Sud metro

  30–35 minutes to central interchange stations. Airport supplement added to the standard metro fare, typically around €5.50 total. Best for travelers already holding a metro pass who want one continuous journey without an outdoor bus stop.

• Taxi

  20–30 minutes depending on traffic and destination. Typically €35–40 to the centre, with a small airport supplement. Best for late arrivals, groups, or anyone with heavy luggage.

Girona–Costa Brava (GRO) — About 100 km north-east, roughly 1–1.5 hours by road

Used mainly by a handful of low-cost routes. There is no rail link direct from the airport itself, so the only realistic options are a coach transfer or taxi.

• Airport coach (timed to flights)

  About 75–90 minutes to Barcelona Nord bus station. Around €20–25 booked in advance. Best for the only sensible option for most arrivals; book alongside your flight.

Reus (REU) — About 115 km south-west, roughly 1.5 hours by road

Similarly used only by a small set of low-cost routes, and similarly far from the city centre despite being marketed as a Barcelona airport.

• Airport coach (timed to flights)

  About 90 minutes to Barcelona Sants. Around €20–25 booked in advance. Best for travelers who booked a Reus route for the fare and are prepared for the extra transfer time.

Which option should you choose?

For El Prat, the Aerobús is the simplest choice if you are staying anywhere near Plaça Catalunya or the Eixample; the R2 Nord train is the better value if your hotel is near Sants or Passeig de Gràcia. Only use official taxis from the marked rank outside arrivals — Barcelona has had recurrent issues with unlicensed drivers approaching travelers inside the terminal. If you are flying into Girona or Reus for a cheaper fare, factor the coach transfer cost and roughly two extra hours each way into whether the saving is real.

Arriving by train

Sants station runs AVE high-speed to Madrid (~2h30), Málaga (~5h30) and Paris (~6h30 via Perpignan). TGV/Renfe overnight sleepers to Zurich and Milan.

Entry and arrival formalities

Schengen external-border checks at BCN for non-EU arrivals; short line at Barcelona Sants for cross-border trains.
