When to visit Kyoto
Late March–early April brings cherry blossom (book 6+ months ahead). Mid-November brings crimson maple momiji at Tofuku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera. May–June and September–October have mild weather and fewer crowds. July–August are hot and humid with festivals (Gion Matsuri). Winter is quiet with occasional snow on Kinkaku-ji.
What each season changes
Kyoto is Japan's traditional heart — 17 UNESCO temples and shrines, the surviving Gion geisha district, kaiseki dining and cherry-blossom and momiji seasons that define Japanese aesthetics.
Season and price
Hotel rates in Kyoto follow demand more closely than weather. Shifting your dates by a week either side of a peak period often moves the nightly rate more than switching hotel category — check live prices for both before committing.
Seasonal planning tips
Do not photograph geiko/maiko on Hanamikoji St — enforced with ¥10,000 fines.
Bus is the backbone of Kyoto transit — ¥800 day pass covers most tourist stops.
Book kaiseki restaurants (Kikunoi, Hyotei, Gion Sasaki) 1–3 months ahead.
