7-day itinerary for Budapest

How this 7-day Budapest plan works

Central Europe triangle from Budapest

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Budapest rather than in transit. BKK metro (M1/M2/M3/M4) + trams (2 + 4/6 are icons) + buses + boats share single ticket HUF450, 24h Travelcard HUF2,500, 72h HUF6,500. Bolt + Főtaxi are safe (avoid random street taxis). Metro line 1 (yellow, UNESCO — Europe's oldest continental subway). Rail from Keleti reaches Vienna 2h30, Prague 6h30, Zagreb 6h.

Best time to run this itinerary

April–June + September–October for warm days, riverside dining and Wine + Sparkling festivals. July–August hot (30–35°C) — pool + Sziget festival season. December for Advent markets at Vörösmarty + St Stephen's Basilica. January–February coldest (below zero) but thermal baths best in snow.

Before you go

  • Avoid 'gentlemen's clubs' near Váci utca — bill scams of €500+ enforced by bouncers.

  • Use Bolt or Főtaxi — never street-flagged taxis (meter tampering).

  • Buy bath tickets online in high season — Széchenyi + Gellért queues can exceed 1h.
