3-day itinerary for Chicago

How this 3-day Chicago plan works

Chicago long weekend

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Chicago rather than in transit. The L (elevated + subway trains) reaches O'Hare (Blue Line 45 min, US$5) and Midway (Orange Line 30 min, US$2.50) plus Downtown, Wrigleyville, Wicker Park. US$2.50 per ride or US$5 unlimited day pass with Ventra card. Uber/Lyft plentiful. Divvy bike-share US$18 day pass. Walk the Loop, Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile — Downtown is grid-perfect and walkable.

Best time to run this itinerary

May–October is the classic window — 20–30°C, patio season, festivals every weekend (Lollapalooza early August, Air & Water Show, Blues Fest, Taste of Chicago). July–August peak humidity. December–February brutally cold (–10°C to 0°C) with lakefront wind chill; hotels 40% cheaper. March–April muddy shoulder. September–October is the sweet spot for weather + walkability.

Before you go

  • Tipping 18–22% at restaurants + auto-gratuity 20% for parties of 6+.

  • Deep-dish takes 45–60 min to bake — order first, drink second. Lou Malnati's / Pequod's / Giordano's are the classics.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb) requires proper coat + gloves + hat; wind chill off the lake is brutal (–20°C real feel possible).
