5-day itinerary for Cusco

How this 5-day Cusco plan works

Cusco + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu classic

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Cusco rather than in transit. Historic centre is compact and walkable but steep + high-altitude — pace yourself the first 48h. Taxis flag-down S/5–10 in centre; Uber + InDriver work reliably. Colectivos to Sacred Valley towns (Pisac S/5, Ollantaytambo S/15) from Calle Puputi + Pavitos. PeruRail Vistadome / Inca Rail to Machu Picchu from Poroy (currently Ollantaytambo — check status) 3h30 US$70–450 return. Cusco airport (CUZ) 15 min taxi S/25.

Day by day

  • Day 1

Day 1–2 — Cusco acclimatise (as above).

  • Day 2

Day 3 — Sacred Valley full day (Pisac + Ollantaytambo + Chinchero) + overnight Ollantaytambo.

  • Day 3

Day 4 — Early PeruRail to Aguas Calientes + Machu Picchu Circuit 2 or 3 + overnight Aguas Calientes.

  • Day 4

Day 5 — Sunrise Machu Picchu (optional 2nd entry) + train back Cusco + Kausay Wasi weavers.

Where to base yourself

  • Plaza de Armas + Centro Histórico

Cathedral, La Compañía, colonial arcades — Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, JW Marriott El Convento, Palacio del Inka Luxury Collection.

  • San Blas

Cobblestone artisan quarter, viewpoints, boutique hotels — Antigua Casona San Blas, El Mercado Tunqui.

  • San Cristóbal + Sacsayhuamán slopes

Panoramic terraces above the plaza — Inkaterra La Casona (Cusco's finest boutique).

  • San Pedro + Santa Ana

San Pedro market + local life west of centre — mid-range hostals + apart-hotels.

Best time to run this itinerary

May–September dry season (sunny days 18–22°C, cold nights 0–5°C) — peak for Inca Trail, Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley trekking; book permits 5–6 months ahead. June 24 Inti Raymi Sun Festival is bucket-list (book 3+ months). October–April is green season with afternoon rain; the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. Shoulder April + October offer clear mornings and lower crowds.

Before you go

  • Book Machu Picchu tickets + Inca Trail permits 3–6 months ahead — timed circuits + limited daily entries sell out in high season.

  • Rest 24–48h at altitude before hiking or Machu Picchu — most AMS cases happen from over-exertion in the first 48h.

  • Boleto Turístico Cusco S/130 covers 16 sites over 10 days including Sacsayhuamán, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero — buy at COSITUC office on Av El Sol.
