How this 5-day Kyoto plan works
Kyoto + Nara + Uji day trips
Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Kyoto rather than in transit. Bus is the backbone of Kyoto transit — flat ¥230 fare, ¥800 day pass. Two subway lines cover Karasuma (Kyoto Station north) and Tozai (Nijo Castle to Higashiyama). JR trains reach Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and Nara. Bike rental (¥1,000/day) works well on Kyoto's flat grid. Kansai Thru Pass covers Kyoto + Osaka + Nara + Kobe transit.
Day by day
Day 1
Day 1–3 — First-time Kyoto highlights.
Day 2
Day 4 — Nara day trip: Todaiji Great Buddha, deer park, Kasuga Taisha (35 min by JR).
Day 3
Day 5 — Uji day trip: Byodoin, matcha tastings at Nakamura Tokichi (20 min by JR).
Where to base yourself
Higashiyama
Temple walking district — Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Yasaka Shrine. Best for first-time culture.
Downtown (Kawaramachi/Pontocho)
Restaurants, Nishiki Market, kaiseki dining alleys. Best for food + walkability.
Arashiyama
Bamboo grove + Tenryu-ji + Togetsukyo Bridge on the western edge. Quiet ryokan overnights.
Kyoto Station area
Shinkansen convenience + business hotels + Kyoto Tower. Best for short stays + connections.
Best time to run this itinerary
Late March–early April brings cherry blossom (book 6+ months ahead). Mid-November brings crimson maple momiji at Tofuku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera. May–June and September–October have mild weather and fewer crowds. July–August are hot and humid with festivals (Gion Matsuri). Winter is quiet with occasional snow on Kinkaku-ji.
Before you go
Do not photograph geiko/maiko on Hanamikoji St — enforced with ¥10,000 fines.
Bus is the backbone of Kyoto transit — ¥800 day pass covers most tourist stops.
Book kaiseki restaurants (Kikunoi, Hyotei, Gion Sasaki) 1–3 months ahead.
