Getting from the airport into London

London has six airports, and the difference between them matters more than the airline price. Heathrow is west and well connected by three separate rail options; Gatwick is 45 km south with fast direct trains; Stansted and Luton are further out and rely on express coaches or rail links; London City sits in the Docklands and is the fastest of all into the centre.

Heathrow (LHR) — About 25 km west of central London

Four terminals, all with rail connections. The Elizabeth line has largely replaced the Heathrow Express for value, running to Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Liverpool Street without a change.

• Elizabeth line

  30 minutes to Paddington, 40 to Liverpool Street. About £12–13 with contactless. Best for almost everyone — direct to the centre with luggage space.

• Heathrow Express

  15 minutes to Paddington. £25 on the day, less booked ahead. Best for tight connections where the 15 minutes genuinely matters.

• Piccadilly line

  50–60 minutes to Covent Garden. Around £5.60 with contactless. Best for budget travelers staying on the Piccadilly line with light bags.

• Taxi or private transfer

  45–90 minutes depending on traffic. £70–100 by black cab; pre-booked cars often less. Best for late arrivals, families and heavy luggage.

Gatwick (LGW) — About 45 km south of central London

Two terminals joined by a shuttle. Rail is the only sensible route in, and the Gatwick Express is not always the fastest — Thameslink and Southern trains often run just as quickly to more useful stations.

• Gatwick Express

  30 minutes to Victoria. About £20 booked online. Best for travelers staying near Victoria or Westminster.

• Thameslink

  35–45 minutes to London Bridge, St Pancras or Farringdon. £12–16. Best for anyone staying north or east of the centre — usually the better choice.

• Coach

  90 minutes or more to Victoria. From £8 booked ahead. Best for budget travelers on flexible timings.

Stansted (STN) — About 65 km north-east

Low-cost carrier hub with a single terminal. The Stansted Express is direct to Liverpool Street; coaches run 24 hours, which matters given how many flights land after midnight.

• Stansted Express

  50 minutes to Liverpool Street. £20–22, cheaper booked in advance. Best for daytime arrivals.

• 24-hour coach

  100–120 minutes to central London. From £10. Best for overnight arrivals when trains are not running.

Which option should you choose?

Two rules. First, check which station a train actually serves before booking the branded express — from Gatwick, a Thameslink to St Pancras or Farringdon is often faster door-to-door than the Express to Victoria plus a Tube. Second, avoid black cabs from Heathrow or Gatwick unless you have a specific reason; the fare is several times the rail cost and the M4 and M23 are unpredictable. All London airport transport, including the Tube and Elizabeth line, accepts contactless payment directly at the gate with no ticket purchase needed.

Arriving by train

St Pancras International runs Eurostar to Paris (~2h20), Brussels (~2h) and Amsterdam (~4h).

Entry and arrival formalities

ETA required for visa-exempt visitors; UK is outside Schengen so an ETA does not cover EU travel.

Most Western, GCC and East-Asian visitors enter visa-free for up to 6 months but now require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation, £16) purchased before departure. Others need a Standard Visitor visa.
