5-day itinerary for Porto

How this 5-day Porto plan works

Porto + Douro Valley + Guimarães

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Porto rather than in transit. STCP metro (A–F lines) + tram (heritage line 1 riverside classic) + bus + Douro suburban trains share Andante card: Z2 single €1.30, day €4.75. Ribeira + Baixa + Vila Nova de Gaia all walkable + steep — funicular Guindais €2.50 saves the calf-burn. Uber + Bolt work well (€4–10). São Bento + Campanhã stations run Alfa Pendular to Lisbon 2h50, Vigo (Spain) 2h30, direct trains to Douro Valley (Pinhão 2h30).

Day by day

  • Day 1

Day 1–3 — Porto classic (as above).

  • Day 2

    Day 4 — Douro Valley day cruise (Pinhão + 2 quinta visits + lunch — 10h).

  • Day 3

Day 5 — Guimarães day (Portugal's birthplace — UNESCO 45 min north) or Braga (religious capital) + Bom Jesus.

Where to base yourself

  • Ribeira (UNESCO riverfront)

Cais da Ribeira + medieval lanes + Dom Luís I bridge — Pestana Vintage Porto, Guest House Douro, Torel Avantgarde.

  • Baixa + Aliados

São Bento + Clérigos + Livraria Lello + shopping — InterContinental Palácio das Cardosas, Grande Hotel do Porto, Maison Albar Le Monumental Palace.

  • Vila Nova de Gaia (Port cellars)

South bank cellars + Yeatman + WOW quarter — The Yeatman (Michelin-starred), Vincci Porto.

  • Foz do Douro + Boavista

Atlantic beach + Serralves modern art + Casa da Música — Sheraton Porto, Crowne Plaza Porto.

Best time to run this itinerary

May–September for warm-mild days (18–26°C) + Douro Valley harvest (mid-Sept). June 23–24 for São João Festival — one of Europe's biggest street parties (locals bop each other with squeaky hammers). July–August peak but coastal breeze keeps Porto cooler than Lisbon. October harvest + wine-tourism peak. Winter (Nov–Feb) 10–15°C + rainy but cheapest + intimate cellars-tour season.

Before you go

  • Book Livraria Lello online 3+ days ahead + go 9:30am opening or last hour (7pm summer) — walk-up queues 2h+.

  • Port-wine cellars: book combos via Get Your Guide or direct 24h ahead — most cellars open Mon–Sat 10am–6pm; Sundays limited.

  • Andante card €0.60 refundable + top up: Z2 24h €4.75 covers airport metro + all city transit + funicular.
