7-day itinerary for Rio de Janeiro

How this 7-day Rio de Janeiro plan works

Rio + Iguaçu Falls + São Paulo

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Rio de Janeiro rather than in transit. Metro (Line 1 to Ipanema/Copacabana) is safe, clean and cheap — BRL R$7.50 per ride. Buses go everywhere but require Portuguese and street sense. Uber and 99 are cheap and universally used (R$15–40 per ride) and much safer than street taxis. GIG airport to Copacabana R$120–150 by Uber (45 min) or BRT connector to metro in 90 min.

Day by day

  • Day 1

Day 1–3 — Full Rio highlights.

  • Day 2

Day 4 — Fly Iguaçu (2h): Brazilian side of Falls + Belmond Hotel das Cataratas dinner.

  • Day 3

Day 5 — Argentine side of Falls (Devil's Throat) + fly São Paulo evening.

  • Day 4

Day 6 — São Paulo: MASP, Ibirapuera Park, Vila Madalena dinner (D.O.M. or A Casa do Porco).

  • Day 5

Day 7 — Fly back Rio for farewell Copacabana Palace afternoon tea + sunset.

Where to base yourself

  • Copacabana

The iconic beach — Copacabana Palace, Fairmont, Miramar, Sofitel line the crescent.

  • Ipanema

Higher-end beach + boutiques — Fasano, Belmond Copacabana, Hotel Praia Ipanema.

  • Leblon

Family-friendly upscale extension of Ipanema — quieter beach, best restaurants.

  • Santa Teresa

Bohemian hilltop — Santa Teresa Hotel MGallery, boutique inns, colonial cobblestones.

Best time to run this itinerary

December–March is peak summer — 30°C+ beach days, packed hotels, Carnaval (mobile date, Feb/March), New Year's Eve on Copacabana beach (2 million+ people). April–May are the sweet spot: 24–28°C, thinner crowds, fewer rain days. June–August is winter — 18–24°C dry days, ocean cool (20°C). September–November: warming spring, thinner crowds.

Before you go

  • Never take valuables to the beach — even sunglasses and phones attract snatch theft.

  • Learn 'quanto custa?' (how much?) and confirm all Uber trips before boarding.

  • Tipping 10% is typically included on restaurant bills (couvert + serviço).
