How this 3-day Vienna plan works

First-time Vienna

Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Vienna rather than in transit. Wiener Linien's 5 U-Bahn lines, trams and buses cover every district; 24h ticket is €8, 72h is €17.10, Vienna City Card bundles transit + museum discounts. City Airport Train (CAT) runs VIE → Wien Mitte in 16 min (€14.90); S7 S-Bahn takes 25 min for €4.30. The historic 1st district is walkable end-to-end.

Day by day

• Day 1

  Day 1 — Schönbrunn Palace morning (Imperial Tour), Naschmarkt lunch, Belvedere afternoon (Klimt), coffee-house evening at Café Central.

• Day 2

  Day 2 — Hofburg complex (Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments), Spanish Riding School morning exercise, Stephansdom climb, Sacher Torte at Hotel Sacher.

• Day 3

  Day 3 — MuseumsQuartier (Leopold Museum, MUMOK), Neubau shopping, evening at Vienna State Opera (standing room from €10).

Where to base yourself

• Innere Stadt (1st district)

  The UNESCO historic core — Stephansdom, Hofburg, Graben, Kärntner Strasse and the grande-dame hotels.

• Neubau (7th)

  Boutique shopping (MQ, Spittelberg), design hotels and independent cafés.

• Leopoldstadt (2nd)

  Emerging riverside district — Prater park, Karmelitermarkt, boutique modern stays.

• Wieden (4th)

  Naschmarkt weekend market, Karlsplatz and easy tram access to the Ring.

Best time to run this itinerary

April–June and September–October give mild 18–24°C days ideal for palace gardens and outdoor cafés. December brings the world's original Christmas markets (Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn, Belvedere). July–August is warm (25–30°C) with a full opera and Salzburg-Festival season; January–February is cold but the Vienna Ball season peaks.
