Rome 7-Day Itinerary
A realistic 7-day Rome itinerary: what to see each day, where to stay, how to move between areas and when to go.
Updated 2026-07-01
How this 7-day Rome plan works
Rome + Italian escape (luxury or slow travel)
Each day below is grouped geographically so you spend your time in Rome rather than in transit. Central Rome is walkable; the Metro has two main lines linking the Colosseum, Termini and the Vatican. Trains from Fiumicino reach Termini in about 30 minutes.
Day by day
Day 1
Day 1–4 — Full Rome essentials + one food-neighbourhood day.
Day 2
Day 5 — Frecciarossa high-speed train to Florence (1h30).
Day 3
Day 6 — Florence: Uffizi, Duomo, sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo.
Day 4
Day 7 — Day trip to Siena or Cinque Terre, back to Rome for departure.
Where to base yourself
Centro Storico
Steps from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.
Trastevere
Cobblestone lanes, trattorias and evening life.
Monti
Boutique hotels near the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
Prati / Vatican
Quieter residential streets close to St Peter's.
Best time to run this itinerary
April–June and September–October offer warm days and manageable crowds. July–August are hot and busy; November–February are quieter with occasional rain.
Before you go
Restaurants near major sights are tourist traps — walk two streets away for better food.
Sunday afternoon buses run less frequently; plan return trips.
Cover shoulders and knees for St Peter's and Vatican Museums.
