Getting from the airport into Singapore
Changi Airport is Singapore's only major gateway and sits 20 km east of the city, connected by a direct MRT line that makes it one of the easiest airport-to-city journeys in Asia. Jewel Changi, the glass dome with the indoor waterfall, sits between the terminals and is worth building 60–90 minutes into a transfer even without a city stay.
Singapore Changi (SIN) — 20 km east of the city centre
Four terminals linked by the free Skytrain, with Jewel Changi connecting Terminals 1, 2 and 3 above ground. Long layovers of five hours or more can comfortably include a walk through Jewel and a shower or nap at an airport transit lounge without leaving the terminal complex.
MRT East West Line
About 30–50 minutes to the city centre, depending on destination and one change at Tanah Merah. Around S$2–2.50 one way. Best for solo travelers and light packers heading to most central areas.
Taxi
20–35 minutes depending on traffic. Roughly S$25–45 to the city centre, including a fixed airport surcharge and any late-night or peak-hour surcharges. Best for late arrivals, families, and anyone with heavy luggage.
Grab or other ride-hailing
20–35 minutes. Typically S$20–40, similar to or slightly less than a metered taxi outside peak surcharge periods. Best for travelers who prefer app-based booking and upfront fares.
Airport shuttle bus
45–60 minutes with multiple hotel stops. Around S$9 per person, booked at the arrivals hall counter. Best for solo or paired travelers going directly to a listed hotel without transfers.
Pre-booked private transfer
20–35 minutes. Typically S$45–70 for a sedan. Best for groups, families, or arrivals late at night who want a fixed price booked in advance.
Which option should you choose?
The MRT is the default choice for most travelers with carry-on luggage and is genuinely comparable in speed to a taxi outside rush hour. Taxis from Changi carry a fixed airport surcharge on top of the metered fare, plus separate late-night and peak surcharges, so a Grab booked in the terminal is often the more transparent price. If you have a layover of six hours or more, Changi's free transit tours and Jewel Changi's Rain Vortex and Canopy Park are worth clearing immigration for even without a full city stay, provided your visa situation allows it.
Arriving by train
Woodlands checkpoint links to Malaysia (KTM shuttle to Johor Bahru in 5 min); through-trains further into Malaysia via KL. No domestic rail.
Entry and arrival formalities
SG Arrival Card mandatory. Chewing gum and vaping are banned; jaywalking is fined.
Most Western, GCC, Japanese, Korean and Chinese passport holders enter visa-free for 30–90 days. All arrivals must submit an SG Arrival Card online within 3 days before entry.
