Athens is a city where the rooftop matters more than the room. How to choose an Athens neighbourhood

Plaka — the oldest continuously inhabited neighbourhood in Europe, at the foot of the Acropolis. Cobbled lanes, tavernas with rooftop views, walk everywhere. Best for a first trip.

Monastiraki — the flea-market district next to Plaka; livelier evenings, cheaper hotels, the same 10-minute walk to the Acropolis entrance.

Koukaki — the boutique-hotel neighbourhood south of the Acropolis; design hotels, the best rooftop bars in the city, quieter mornings.

Thissio — west of the Acropolis; the pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou promenade for sunset walks, fewer hotels, most local.

Kolonaki — the polished uptown neighbourhood; designer shopping, museums (Benaki, Cycladic Art), Michelin dinners. Best for repeat visitors.

Skip anywhere near Omonia and Larissa Station — cheap on paper, rough at night.

The Acropolis-view rooftop is the point

The single best amenity in Athens is a rooftop with an Acropolis view. Any hotel that has it will lead with it in the photos; any that doesn't will bury the description.

The most iconic rooftop bars — A for Athens, 360 Cocktail Bar, Couleur Locale — are open to non-guests. Book a hotel with its own rooftop and you skip the queue.

For the money-no-object shot, the design hotels on Dionysiou Areopagitou (the pedestrian street below the Acropolis) put the temple in the window of the room itself.

What to expect on price

Budget (€60-€120): a clean 3-star boutique in Monastiraki or Koukaki with a small rooftop breakfast area.

Mid-range (€150-€260): a stylish boutique with an Acropolis-view rooftop bar — the sweet spot for most travellers.

Upper mid (€300-€500): a design hotel on Dionysiou Areopagitou with a rooftop pool and a proper restaurant.

Luxury (€600-€1,500+): the Grande Bretagne, Hotel Grand Hyatt Athens rooftop, and the palace suites of the King George.

When to visit

April-June and September-October are the sweet spot: 20-28°C, long evenings, sights manageable. Easter week is the busiest of the year for Greek travellers.

July-August is hot (33-38°C) — do the Acropolis at 08:00, spend the middle of the day in an air-conditioned museum, and dine on a rooftop after 21:00.

November-March is mild (12-18°C), often sunny, with the lowest rates and the emptiest Parthenon of the year.

How many days do I need in Athens?

Three full days: one for the Acropolis + Ancient Agora + Plaka, one for the National Archaeological Museum + Kolonaki, one for a day trip to Cape Sounion or the Athenian Riviera. Add a night for a proper rooftop dinner.

Do I need to book the Acropolis in advance?

Yes — timed tickets are mandatory in high season and the earliest slot (08:00) is the only way to experience the Parthenon without a wall of people in your photograph. Book online 1-2 weeks ahead.

Is Athens safe?

The tourist neighbourhoods (Plaka, Monastiraki, Koukaki, Kolonaki) are safe day and night. Avoid the streets around Omonia after dark. Standard precautions with bags on the metro and in crowded squares.
