One&Only Cape Town
V&A Waterfront ultra-luxury flagship — best base for a family or splurge Cape Town opener.
Cape Town · Ultra-luxury
The Garden Route is South Africa's classic self-drive — the N2 hugs the Indian Ocean coast for 300 km through beach towns, indigenous forests, wine valleys and the country's flagship elephant park. Below is the itinerary that works, where to stay and how to pick a rental car through our existing partners.
Nights 1-3 — Cape Town: Table Mountain (early cable-car booking), Cape Point + Boulders penguins, Kirstenbosch, V&A Waterfront, Constantia wine lunch.
Night 4 — Hermanus (1h45 drive): whale-watching from the cliffs (June-Nov) or a boat-based Southern Right encounter; dinner at Char'd Grill.
Night 5 — Mossel Bay or Oudtshoorn detour (Cango Caves + ostrich farms).
Nights 6-7 — Wilderness / Knysna area: lagoon paddle, Featherbed Nature Reserve ferry, oysters at Knysna Quays.
Night 8 — Plettenberg Bay: Robberg Peninsula walk, beach afternoon, Emily Moon or The Plettenberg for sunset.
Night 9 — Tsitsikamma: Storms River suspension bridge, indigenous-forest walks, Bloukrans bungee (216 m — the world's highest bridge jump) if you're brave.
Nights 10 — Addo Elephant National Park: full-day game drive; fly out of PLZ (Gqeberha) that evening or the next morning.
The N2 is a well-maintained tarmac highway; any category works. For 2 people, a compact automatic (VW Polo or similar) is USD 35-55/day. For a family of 4 with luggage, book an intermediate SUV (VW Tiguan / Toyota RAV4).
Pick up at Cape Town International (CPT), drop off at Port Elizabeth (PLZ) — the one-way fee is usually reasonable (USD 40-80). Book through our EconomyBookings / Discover Cars integration for cross-supplier comparison.
Cross-border into Namibia/Botswana requires a letter from the rental company — decline unless you're actually driving there, as it costs extra.
Hermanus: land-based whale watching from Walker Bay cliffs (Jun-Nov), Old Harbour, Whale Crier.
De Hoop / Cape Agulhas detour (worth an extra night): the southernmost tip of Africa and a quieter whale-watching alternative to Hermanus.
Tsitsikamma: Storms River Mouth suspension bridge, Otter Trail day-hikes, canopy tours.
Addo Elephant NP: ~600 elephants, plus lion, buffalo, zebra — the malaria-free family-friendly alternative to Kruger. Book a private guide with an open vehicle if possible.
Cape Town International (CPT) — direct long-haul from London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Doha and Dubai; connections via Johannesburg from most others.
Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha, PLZ) — daily domestic flights to CPT and JNB; use it as your one-way drop-off airport.
Kiwitaxi is useful for the initial CPT arrival and PLZ departure transfers.
