Marrakech Menara Airport Transfers: The Honest 2026 Guide
Marrakech Menara (RAK) is 6 km from the medina and 4 km from Gueliz. The transfer itself is straightforward — the question is whether you arrive to a driver holding a name-board or to the taxi rank scrum. Below is what each option really costs, and what to do if your flight lands at 2am.
Your options, ranked
Pre-booked private transfer (€18-€28, sedan for up to 3 pax; €30-€45, minivan for up to 6). Fixed price, driver waits with a name-board inside arrivals, flight tracked. This is what we recommend for first-time visitors, families, and any arrival after 10pm.
Grand taxi at the rank (150-250 MAD). Cheaper on paper, but the airport rank is not metered — agree the fare before you sit in the car. Late-night surcharges apply.
Petit taxi (100-150 MAD to Gueliz). Fine if you're not going into the medina and travel light; petit taxis take up to 3 passengers, no boot for large suitcases.
Bus 19 (30 MAD). The airport express to Jemaa el-Fnaa via Gueliz; runs every 30 min from 06:30 to 21:30. Fine in daylight with a small bag; painful with luggage.
Ride-hail apps (Careem, inDrive). Working in Marrakech but pickup zones for the airport change; drivers may ask you to walk to the terminal exit road.
Medina drop-off — the part everyone gets wrong
Cars cannot enter most of the medina. Even a €28 private car drops you at the nearest gate: Bab Doukkala, Bab Ksour, Bab Laksour or Bab Agnaou depending on your riad's location.
Confirm the drop-off gate with your riad on WhatsApp before you fly, and ask them to send a porter with a cart. Give the driver your riad's contact — most riads coordinate the handover by phone.
If you're arriving with more than one large suitcase per person, tip the porter 20-30 MAD.
Late-night arrivals
Between 22:00 and 06:00 the airport rank charges a 50% surcharge and drivers can be pushy. A pre-booked transfer is €5-€10 more than a daytime one but the driver is inside arrivals when you clear customs, and the price is what you paid online.
Riads will always arrange a transfer for you (usually €25-€35), but this is bookable in advance at a similar price with the added benefit of flight tracking if your inbound is delayed.
What about a car rental?
Skip a rental car for Marrakech itself — the medina is car-free and city parking is a headache. Rent a car only if you're driving out to Essaouira, Ouarzazate or the High Atlas villages. Pick up the car on the day you leave the city, not on arrival.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the medina?
A pre-booked private transfer is €18-€28 for a sedan (up to 3 passengers). Grand taxis at the airport rank charge 150-250 MAD (€14-€23) but the price is negotiated, not metered.
How long does it take to get from RAK airport to the medina?
15-20 minutes in normal traffic, 25-30 minutes during rush hour (08:00-10:00 and 17:00-19:00) or on Ramadan evenings around iftar.
Can I pay in euros?
Pre-booked online transfers are paid by card in advance. Airport taxis technically only accept dirhams, but most drivers will take euros at a slightly worse rate — carry small dirham notes as a backup.
Is there Uber at Marrakech airport?
No Uber. Careem and inDrive both operate in Marrakech but airport pickup zones change; a pre-booked private transfer is more reliable for a first arrival.
How do I get from Marrakech airport to Essaouira, Fes or the Sahara directly?
Yes, private long-distance transfers are bookable straight from RAK — Essaouira (~2.5h, €120-€180), Fes (~7h, €280-€400), or Merzouga (~9h, €300-€450). Most travellers prefer to spend at least one night in Marrakech first.
Do transfer drivers speak English?
Pre-booked transfer companies guarantee an English-speaking driver. Airport-rank taxi drivers usually speak French and Darija, with basic English.
What size vehicle do I need?
Sedan for up to 3 passengers with medium luggage. Minivan for 4-6 passengers or groups with several large suitcases. Book a minivan if you have a child seat requirement.
