Iceland Ring Road Guide: 7–10 Days from Reykjavik
Iceland's Ring Road is the world's best-known circular self-drive — a full loop past waterfalls, black-sand beaches, glaciers, fjords, geothermal fields and puffin cliffs. Below is our field-tested 10-day itinerary from Reykjavik, the seasonal reality check, and how to book with live rates through our partners.
How long do you actually need?
7 days: minimum viable loop — you'll drive 3-5 hours most days and skip Snæfellsnes or the Eastfjords. Doable but tiring.
10 days: the sweet spot — one 'nothing day' at Lake Mývatn, one at Höfn/Jökulsárlón, one on Snæfellsnes.
14 days: add the Westfjords (Ísafjörður, Dynjandi, Látrabjarg puffins). Requires ferry timing or long backtracks.
5 days: skip the Ring — do the Golden Circle + South Coast + Snæfellsnes out-and-back from Reykjavik instead.
Day-by-day (clockwise from Reykjavik)
Day 1 — Reykjavik to Vík (190 km): Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black-sand beach.
Day 2 — Vík to Höfn (275 km): Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, Skaftafell hike, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Diamond Beach.
Day 3 — Höfn to Egilsstaðir (250 km): Eastfjords drive, Djúpivogur, Seyðisfjörður side trip.
Day 4 — Egilsstaðir to Lake Mývatn (170 km): Hengifoss detour, Dettifoss, Krafla, Mývatn Nature Baths.
Day 5 — Mývatn area (nothing day): Dimmuborgir, Skútustaðir pseudo-craters, Húsavík whale-watching side trip.
Day 6 — Mývatn to Akureyri (100 km): Goðafoss, arrive early, dinner in town.
Day 7 — Akureyri to Snæfellsnes (500 km — the long day): break up with Grábrók crater or an overnight in Búðardalur.
Day 8 — Snæfellsnes peninsula: Kirkjufell, Djúpalónssandur, Snæfellsjökull, Arnarstapi coastal walk.
Day 9 — Snæfellsnes to Reykjavik (200 km) via Borgarnes: settle-day, Reykjavik dinner.
Day 10 — Golden Circle day trip from Reykjavik: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, Secret Lagoon on the way back.
Which rental car do you need?
June-September: a 2WD compact (Dacia Duster, VW Golf class) is fine for the Ring Road proper. You do NOT need a 4x4 unless you're driving F-roads (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja) — F-roads legally require a 4x4.
October-April: rent a 4x4 with proper winter tyres and gravel-protection insurance — weather-based road closures are frequent, especially in the East and North.
Always add gravel + sand-and-ash + windscreen-crack + SAAP insurance in Iceland; door damage from wind is common and not covered by basic CDW.
Book 3-6 months ahead in peak season through our EconomyBookings / Discover Cars partners — Reykjavik / Keflavík pickup is standard.
When to go
June-August: midnight sun, all roads open, best hiking, biggest crowds and priciest hotels.
September-October: Northern Lights start, autumn colours, still-manageable weather, better prices.
November-March: Aurora peak, ice caves in Vatnajökull, but shortest days (4-5 hours of daylight in December) and F-roads closed.
April-May: shoulder — waterfalls at snowmelt-peak, some highland routes still closed.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for the Ring Road?
Seven days minimum, ten comfortably, fourteen if adding the Westfjords. Anything less than seven and you're better off doing a South Coast + Snæfellsnes out-and-back from Reykjavik.
Clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Clockwise from Reykjavik front-loads the South Coast highlights (Seljalandsfoss, Jökulsárlón) while you're freshest and saves Snæfellsnes as a satisfying finale close to the airport.
Do I need a 4x4?
Only for winter (October-April) or F-roads (Landmannalaugar, Askja, Þórsmörk). The Ring Road itself is fully paved and fine for a 2WD in summer.
Is Iceland expensive?
Yes — food and accommodation are among Europe's highest. Cook some meals from Bónus supermarket stops, self-cater at guesthouses, and book accommodation 3-6 months ahead for best rates.
How do I get from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavik?
Flybus and Airport Direct coaches run to the BSÍ terminal — 45 minutes. For groups and late arrivals, a pre-booked Kiwitaxi private transfer drops you at the hotel.
