Which gateway to fly into
Jackson Hole (JAC): inside Grand Teton, 60 miles to Yellowstone's south entrance. Best for a Tetons-first itinerary and the widest luxury-lodge choice (Amangani, Four Seasons Jackson Hole in Teton Village).
Bozeman (BZN): 90 miles to the north entrance at Gardiner. Best for Lamar Valley wildlife and a geyser-basin loop, and the fastest access to Mammoth Hot Springs.
West Yellowstone (WYS, seasonal): the smallest airport, at the west entrance closest to Old Faithful.
Salt Lake City (SLC): a 5-hour scenic drive north via Idaho; the cheapest airfare option and easily combined with a Utah parks add-on.
A five-to-seven-day itinerary
Day 1: Fly into Jackson, Teton Village. Sunset at Schwabacher Landing or Mormon Row.
Day 2: Jenny Lake shuttle, Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point hike, Snake River wildlife float.
Day 3: Drive north into Yellowstone via Grand Teton, base at Old Faithful Inn. Upper and Lower Geyser Basins.
Day 4: Grand Prismatic Overlook, Fairy Falls, Midway Basin, drive to Canyon Lodge.
Day 5: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (Artist Point, Lookout Point, Uncle Tom's), Hayden Valley wildlife at dusk.
Day 6: Lamar Valley sunrise wolves and bison, Mammoth Hot Springs, exit through Gardiner to Bozeman (or loop back south).
Add a Day 7 in Jackson Hole to reset and shop; add days if you want a serious hike (Cascade Canyon, Delta Lake).

When is the best time to visit Yellowstone?
