Bali is Indonesia's Hindu island — a single destination with four completely different experiences: jungle-and-yoga Ubud, surf-and-nightlife Canggu, beach-club luxury Seminyak/Kerobokan, and clifftop-resort Uluwatu. Rice terraces and volcanoes fill the interior; the Gili Islands, Nusa Penida and Lombok extend the trip east. Nusa Dua and Jimbaran anchor the family-resort belt.

April–October is the dry season (peak July–August). November–March is the green season — cheaper resorts, dramatic waterfalls, occasional downpours. Nyepi (Balinese New Year, March) shuts the island for 24 hours of silence — no flights, no lights, plan accordingly.
Bali has no urban transit — rent a scooter (~IDR 70k/day), hire a private driver (IDR 700k–900k/day, ~USD 45–60), or use Grab/Gojek for point-to-point rides. Traffic between Kuta ↔ Ubud can hit 90 min in peak. Ngurah Rai (DPS) airport is 15 min from Kuta/Seminyak and 90 min from Ubud/Uluwatu.
Ubud
Jungle interior — rice terraces (Tegallalang), Sacred Monkey Forest, yoga retreats, Four Seasons Sayan, COMO Shambhala. Best for wellness, honeymoon, culture.
Seminyak / Kerobokan
Beach-club and boutique-shopping strip — Potato Head, Ku De Ta, W Bali, The Legian, Alila Seminyak. Best for luxury nightlife + design.
Canggu / Berawa / Pererenan
Surf-and-brunch capital — coworking, expat cafés, boutique villas, Finns Beach Club. Best for digital nomads + surfers.
Uluwatu / Bukit
Clifftop resorts and world-class surf — Six Senses, Bulgari, Alila Villas Uluwatu, Rock Bar at Ayana. Best for honeymoon + iconic views.
Nusa Dua / Jimbaran
Enclosed 5-star resort belt — St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Mulia, Four Seasons Jimbaran. Best for families + turnkey resorts.
Visa on Arrival IDR 500,000 (~USD 35) for 90+ nationalities — 30 days, extendable once in-country for another 30. e-VoA (pre-arrival) skips airport queues. New IDR 150k Bali tourist levy since Feb 2024.
Official government sourceAirports

Signature dishes
Etiquette
Tap water is not safe — drink bottled. Bintang is the local lager; arak (rice spirit) is potent — buy branded only. Fresh coconut, jamu tonics and Balinese coffee (kopi Bali) are daily staples.
Most Western, GCC, ASEAN, Japanese, Korean and Chinese passport holders get Visa on Arrival (VoA) for 30 days at IDR 500,000 (~USD 35), extendable once for another 30 days. Apply for e-VoA at molina.imigrasi.go.id before departure to skip queues. New IDR 150,000 tourist levy applies.
First-timers: split 3 nights Ubud (culture/rice terraces) + 3 nights Seminyak or Canggu (beach/nightlife). Honeymoon: Ubud (Four Seasons Sayan) + Uluwatu (Bulgari). Families: Nusa Dua all-inclusive resorts. Surfers/nomads: Canggu. Party: Seminyak.
There's no public transit. Options: scooter rental (IDR 70k/day, dangerous for beginners), private driver (IDR 700–900k/day covering multiple destinations), Grab/Gojek for shorter hops (banned in some tourist zones — use metered taxis Blue Bird instead). Plan Ubud ↔ Seminyak = 60–90 min.
Seven days is the minimum for a first visit — 3 in Ubud + 4 in the south (Seminyak/Canggu/Uluwatu). Ten days add a Gili Islands or Nusa Penida overnight. Fourteen days let you add Amed diving or Munduk waterfalls. Honeymoons often split Ubud (4) + Uluwatu (4).
Generally safe — the main risks are scooter accidents (rent only if experienced, wear a helmet, hospital costs are real), Bali belly (drink bottled water, wash fruit), and rip currents on Kuta/Padang Padang beaches. Emergency 112, Tourist Police +62 361 754599. Nyepi Day (March) full lockdown.
Tegallalang rice terraces at sunrise, Uluwatu Kecak fire dance at sunset, Mount Batur sunrise trek, Nusa Penida boat day (Kelingking Beach), Sacred Monkey Forest Ubud, Tanah Lot sea temple, cooking class in Ubud, sunset drinks at Rock Bar (Ayana) or Single Fin (Uluwatu).
Very — Waterbom Bali (top-rated Asian waterpark), Bali Zoo, Bali Safari, Finns Recreation Club and Nusa Dua's turnkey resorts (Grand Hyatt, Mulia, Ritz-Carlton) with kids clubs are the family stalwarts. Ubud with young kids is challenging (winding roads); Nusa Dua and Sanur are easier.
