When to visit

Late March–early April brings cherry blossom (book 6+ months ahead). Mid-November brings crimson maple momiji at Tofuku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera. May–June and September–October have mild weather and fewer crowds. July–August are hot and humid with festivals (Gion Matsuri). Winter is quiet with occasional snow on Kinkaku-ji.

Getting around

Bus is the backbone of Kyoto transit — flat ¥230 fare, ¥800 day pass. Two subway lines cover Karasuma (Kyoto Station north) and Tozai (Nijo Castle to Higashiyama). JR trains reach Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and Nara. Bike rental (¥1,000/day) works well on Kyoto's flat grid. Kansai Thru Pass covers Kyoto + Osaka + Nara + Kobe transit.
