Le Sirenuse
The definitive Positano address — 58-room pink-façade family-run legend with the coast's best terrace bar and Franco's cocktails.
Positano · Ultra-luxury icon
The Amalfi Coast is 50 km of impossibly beautiful, impossibly narrow road linking six villages between Sorrento and Salerno. The village and hotel you pick controls whether your trip is magic or a summer traffic jam. Below is our shortlist across Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Praiano — cliffside classics, small boutiques and the discreet ultra-luxury names — with live rates through our licensed hotel partner.
Positano: the postcard cliffside village with the beach, best boutique dinner scene, most beautiful evenings. Also the most stairs, hardest parking, priciest hotels — pick a hotel with private shuttle to the Sponda bus stop.
Ravello: perched 350 m above the sea — Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo gardens, Ravello Festival in summer, cooler air, quietest evenings. Best for a two-night second base after Positano.
Amalfi town: the transport hub — ferries fan out from here, cathedral is beautiful. Least atmospheric to sleep in unless you want ferry-first days.
Praiano: the Positano understudy — 10 minutes down the road, same sea, cheaper, calmer. Best value coast-classic stays.
Sorrento: not technically the Amalfi Coast but the arrival gateway — good for one arrival night if driving down late.
Skip Salerno and Vietri unless you're chasing budget prices; they are commuter towns, not resort villages.
Cliff-face hotels above Positano and Praiano (Il San Pietro, Casa Angelina, Le Sirenuse's upper suites) give the classic wraparound view but require the private shuttle for every outing.
Village-centre hotels in Positano (Le Sirenuse, Villa TreVille) trade some elevation for walk-out access to boutiques and dinner.
Beach-level hotels (Marina Grande in Amalfi, Covo dei Saraceni) are best for older travellers or families who can't handle Amalfi's stairs.
Ravello hotels (Palazzo Avino, Belmond Caruso) are cliff-top gardens with pool terraces above the sea — the calmest atmosphere on the coast.
Fly Naples (NAP) — 60-90 minutes by pre-booked transfer to Positano, closer for Sorrento. Book a Kiwitaxi private transfer or hotel car; taxi meters do not work reliably on this coast.
Do not rent a car for the coast itself — the SS163 road is one narrow lane each way with hairpin bends, ban on non-resident cars in season, and paid-only parking that costs more than a taxi. Rent only if extending into Puglia after.
The SITA bus runs the coast for a couple of euros each way but is packed and slow June-August. Ferries are faster, cooler and more scenic — Positano ↔ Amalfi ↔ Salerno run all summer.
Book Capri and Pompeii day trips through our tour partner — beats the ticket queue and includes hotel transfers.

Late May-June and September-early October are the sweet spots — warm sea, long days, thinner crowds than July-August, and ferries still running. July-August are gorgeous but hot, packed and traffic-choked. Many hotels and restaurants close November-March.
Four nights minimum: two in Positano + two in Ravello. Five to six lets you add Capri and Pompeii day trips without rushing. Under three is not worth the transfer effort.
Almost never. The SS163 is a one-lane cliff road with a summer ban on non-resident vehicles and impossible parking. Pre-book transfers and use ferries + hotel shuttles instead.
Positano is essentially a staircase — hard for young kids and mobility-limited travellers. Base in Amalfi town or a beach-level hotel instead, and use ferries.
Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer — 90 minutes to Positano, 75 to Amalfi, 105 to Ravello. Naples train + Sorrento Circumvesuviana + SITA bus is possible but painful with luggage.
