Santorini's hotel scene is almost entirely defined by one question: do you want the caldera view or not? Cave suites carved into the cliff face at Oia and Imerovigli are the honeymoon shot everyone knows — and priced accordingly. Which village should you stay in?

Oia (north tip): the postcard. Blue-domed churches, the world's most photographed sunset, boutique cave suites. Trade-offs: crowded 4-8pm daily, steepest prices, hardest luggage access.

Imerovigli (mid-caldera): the same caldera view as Oia but quieter and higher — the actual highest point on the rim. Best value in the luxury segment.

Firostefani: the walking bridge between Fira and Imerovigli. Caldera view, 15-min walk to Fira's restaurants.

Fira (main hub): buses, banks, the cable car down to the old port, the best nightlife. Pick this if you'll day-trip a lot and want convenience over silence.

Kamari and Perissa (east and south beach): black volcanic sand, family hotels, no caldera view but 40-60% cheaper. Great for families and longer stays.

Akrotiri and Pyrgos (south / centre): quieter villages, some of the best restaurants (Selene) and the archaeological site. Rental car recommended.

Cave suites, honeymoon pools and what 'caldera view' really means

'Caldera view' can mean anything from a full private-terrace infinity pool over the cliff to a shared rooftop three levels up. Read recent photos before booking — the difference is thousands of euros.

Cave suites (yposkafa) are dug into the volcanic tuff. Cool in summer, sometimes damp in winter, always small — a 40 sqm suite is generous.

Plunge pools vs heated pools matter: April, May, October and even early June can be too cold for unheated pools. Confirm the pool is heated if you're travelling shoulder season.

Getting there and around

Santorini (JTR) is a 45-minute flight from Athens or a 5-8 hour ferry from Piraeus or the neighbouring Cyclades. High-speed catamarans (Seajets, Blue Star) are the fastest boats.

The road from the airport or the new port to Oia is 20 km of switchbacks. Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer to skip the shared-shuttle wait — €30-€60 depending on village and party size.

A rental car is worth it for 3+ nights (visits to Akrotiri, Pyrgos, wineries and remote beaches). Book 4-8 weeks ahead in July-August. In Oia itself, cars are useless — everything is pedestrian.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?

May and late September to early October are the sweet spot: reliably warm, swimmable sea, half the July-August crowds and 20-40% cheaper hotels. June and September are the shoulder peak. Avoid mid-August unless you love packed sunsets.

How far in advance should I book?

For June-September stays in Oia or Imerovigli, 6-12 months ahead is normal — the top ~30 caldera suites sell out first. Shoulder-season is easier and often bookable 2-3 months out.

Is a car worth renting on Santorini?

Yes for stays of 3+ nights or if you want to visit Akrotiri, Pyrgos, wineries and remote beaches. Not needed if you're staying in Oia and mostly walking the caldera path.

Is Oia or Imerovigli better for a honeymoon?

Oia for the iconic experience, Imerovigli for the same view with more calm and typically a better hotel for the money. Both are honeymoon-perfect — the choice is atmosphere vs value.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer to Oia (35-45 min) or Imerovigli (25-30 min). Shared shuttles exist but wait times can be long and Santorini's roads are tight for luggage-heavy taxis.
