Which neighbourhood should you pick?
Riverside (Chao Phraya): the classic Bangkok stay — Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Four Seasons, Capella. Trade-off: you'll use the free hotel shuttle boats and the river ferry to reach the BTS.
Sukhumvit (Asok / Phrom Phong / Thonglor): the best all-round base. Direct BTS Skytrain access, world-class restaurants, EmQuartier and EmSphere malls, easy taxis. Ideal for first-timers.
Silom / Sathorn: the business district. Best rooftop-bar concentration (Vertigo, Sky Bar, Cé La Vi at MahaNakhon), Lumphini Park, MRT and BTS interchange.
Ari and Phaya Thai: the local-cool neighbourhoods — cafés, boutique guesthouses, closer to Chatuchak weekend market.
Rattanakosin / Old Town: closest to Grand Palace and Wat Pho, most atmospheric — but no BTS, so plan on taxis and boats.
How much should you pay?
$60-$120 gets you an excellent four-star with pool and BTS access in Sukhumvit.
$180-$300 gets you an upper-tier five-star (Sofitel So, Park Hyatt, Rosewood) or a proper riverside suite.
$400+ moves into the true icons — Mandarin Oriental garden suites, Peninsula river-view corner rooms, Four Seasons at Chao Phraya.
Green season (May-October) is 20-40% cheaper than peak (December-February) with only a slightly higher chance of afternoon rain.
Getting there and around
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is Bangkok's main airport, 30 km east of the city. The Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in 30 minutes.
Don Mueang (DMK) handles low-cost carriers, 25 km north. Uber-like Grab and the A1/A2 buses connect to the BTS.
Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer if you land after 10pm, have 3+ people, or are going riverside (a taxi from BKK to the Mandarin Oriental at rush hour can top 90 minutes).
In the city, use the BTS Skytrain and MRT metro over taxis 8am-8pm — Bangkok traffic is legendary. Grab cars and motorbikes are the evening go-to.
