Which neighbourhood should you pick?
Ipanema: the sweet spot for most first visits — cleaner sand, better restaurants and bars, walkable to Leblon and Copacabana, safer feel at night.
Copacabana: the postcard 4-km beach, biggest hotel choice and best value per beachfront room, but busier and more mixed at night — stay near Posto 6 (Ipanema end).
Leblon: Ipanema's quieter, more residential and upmarket neighbour — best for a calm base with excellent restaurants.
Santa Teresa: hillside boutique quarter with cobblestone streets, colonial mansions and Christ the Redeemer views — take taxis after dark.
Botafogo & Urca: local, non-touristy, and Urca in particular is one of Rio's safest neighbourhoods with Sugarloaf on your doorstep.
Skip Centro (deserted after office hours) and Barra da Tijuca (too far from the classic Rio) for a short first visit.
Beachfront vs one block back — the price break
Beachfront (Avenida Atlântica in Copacabana, Vieira Souto in Ipanema, Delfim Moreira in Leblon) charges a 30-60 percent premium over hotels one street back.
For a first Rio trip the ocean-view is worth it once — book the highest floor with a full frontal view, not 'lateral'.
For longer stays or repeat visitors, one block back (Rua Barata Ribeiro in Copacabana, Rua Prudente de Morais in Ipanema) delivers the same neighbourhood at a fraction of the price.
Getting there and around
Rio has two airports: GIG (Galeão, international, 20 km north) and SDU (Santos Dumont, domestic, right by Centro). Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer — the ride can take 40-90 minutes depending on traffic and it beats the taxi queue and the airport bus with luggage.
Inside the Zona Sul (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), walk by day and use Uber at night — it's cheap, safe and the drivers know the one-way maze.
The Metro Linha 1 connects Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo and Centro — quick and safe for museum days.
You do not need a rental car for a city trip. Rent only if you're extending to Buzios, Ilha Grande or Paraty.

December-March is peak summer (hottest, busiest, priciest — Carnival and New Year). April-June and September-November offer warm weather, thinner crowds and much better hotel prices. July-August is Rio's mild winter (20-25°C) — still beach weather most days.
How many days do I need in Rio?
