Zurich — quick city base

One-two nights is enough for a Zurich stopover — old town (Altstadt), Bahnhofstrasse, Lake Zurich boat, Lindenhof for the classic view.

Stay in Kreis 1 (Old Town / Bahnhofstrasse) for walkable everything, or on the lake shore around Bürkliplatz for the summer views.

Zurich Airport (ZRH) has direct trains every 10 minutes to Hauptbahnhof (10 min) and onwards to Interlaken (2h). No need for a car.

Interlaken vs alpine villages — where to actually sleep

Interlaken: the valley-floor transport hub between Thun and Brienz lakes — every train to the Jungfrau starts here. Best for logistics, mediocre for atmosphere.

Grindelwald: valley village at 1,034 m under the Eiger north face — best for the new Eiger Express gondola to Jungfraujoch, most restaurants of any Jungfrau village.

Wengen: car-free village at 1,274 m, reached only by cog railway from Lauterbrunnen — quietest, most postcard, best for the classic Jungfrau train ride.

Mürren: even higher car-free village at 1,638 m — smallest, quietest, best Piz Gloria (Schilthorn) access, more remote.

Lauterbrunnen: dramatic valley floor with the 72 waterfalls — best photo, easy hub, cheaper than the mountain villages.

For a first trip: 1 night Zurich + 3 nights Grindelwald (or Wengen for quieter charm) + 1 night back through Lucerne is a great 5-night loop.

Trains, passes and Jungfraujoch

The Swiss Travel Pass covers all trains, boats and most mountain lifts (partial discount on Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn) — 4-day and 8-day passes are usually the best value.

Jungfraujoch 'Top of Europe' (3,454 m): the classic day trip from Interlaken or Grindelwald — go early on a clear-morning forecast, not on a cloudy day.

First Cliff Walk (Grindelwald First), Schilthorn (Piz Gloria), Männlichen ridge hike and the Lauterbrunnen waterfalls trail are the four other must-do experiences.

GoldenPass Line trains (Interlaken ↔ Lucerne, Interlaken ↔ Montreux) are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and included in every scenic-train shortlist for good reason.

Getting there and around

Fly Zurich (ZRH) or Geneva (GVA). Zurich is faster to the Jungfrau (2h train direct via Bern); Geneva is better if you're also visiting Zermatt.

Do not rent a car for a Jungfrau-only trip — the Swiss rail network is faster, cheaper and included in your pass. Rent only if extending to Interlaken → Zermatt via mountain passes.

Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer for Zurich Airport → hotel if arriving with heavy luggage or late; otherwise the ZRH → Hauptbahnhof train runs every 10 minutes.

When is the best time to visit the Jungfrau?

Late June-early September for hiking with everything open (mountain lifts, high passes). January-March for ski. May and October are shoulder — cheaper, quieter, some upper lifts closed for maintenance. Avoid mid-April and mid-November — many mountain hotels close for the between-seasons break.

How many days do I need?

Four days minimum for the Jungfrau region alone: Jungfraujoch, First Cliff Walk, a valley waterfall day, and one alpine hike. Add 1-2 Zurich nights on top for a 5-6 day trip.

Interlaken or the mountain villages — which is better?

Mountain villages (Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren) for the wake-up-in-the-mountains experience. Interlaken as a valley-floor base for logistics, easier arrivals with heavy luggage, and broader restaurant choice. Wengen and Mürren are car-free — a plus for atmosphere, a small hassle for luggage transfers.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?
