TN side vs NC side — where to base
Gatlinburg (TN, park's front door): walk-in access to the Sugarlands Visitor Center; Ober Mountain sky-lift. Best for first-timers who want to be steps from the park.
Pigeon Forge (TN, 8 miles from the park): Dollywood, family attractions, the widest cabin and hotel choice. Best for families.
Townsend (TN, quiet side): 10 minutes to Cades Cove and vastly less crowded than Gatlinburg. Best for wildlife-first travellers.
Cherokee (NC side): the Oconaluftee entrance, Blue Ridge Parkway start point. Best for combining with the parkway and Asheville.
Asheville (NC, 60 miles from the park): the region's best food, music and hotels (Grand Bohemian, Kimpton Hotel Arras, The Foundry). Best if you want a proper city base and a scenic Blue Ridge Parkway drive in.
The five best things to do
Cades Cove Loop (11 miles, TN side): the wildlife-watching drive. Go at dawn for bears, deer and elk. Wednesday mornings are vehicle-free (May-September) for cyclists and walkers.
Clingmans Dome (6,643 ft, the highest point in the park): a paved half-mile walk to the observation tower. Closes December-March for road snow.
Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte (11 miles round trip): the classic Smokies day hike, with the option to stay overnight at LeConte Lodge (the only in-park lodge; book 12 months ahead by lottery).
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail: a 5.5-mile one-way loop through old-growth forest, historic cabins and Grotto Falls trailhead.
Newfound Gap and the Appalachian Trail: park at Newfound Gap and hike a mile of the AT on the state line ridge — the easiest AT experience in the park.
Getting there from Atlanta, Nashville and Asheville
From Atlanta (ATL): 200 miles / 3.5 hours north via I-75 and Knoxville to Gatlinburg. Combine with a Chattanooga stop.
From Nashville (BNA): 220 miles / 3.5 hours east on I-40 through Knoxville. The classic Music-City-to-Smokies weekend.
From Asheville (AVL): 55 miles / 1.5 hours west via the Blue Ridge Parkway or I-40. The most scenic approach.
From Charlotte (CLT): 175 miles / 3 hours west, easily combined with the Blue Ridge Parkway.
There is no rail or airport shuttle into the park. Book a Kiwitaxi private transfer from Knoxville (TYS, the closest airport, 45 minutes) if you don't want to drive from a bigger hub.

No entrance fee — the park was deeded to the federal government by the states of Tennessee and North Carolina on the condition it stay free. Since 2023, parking requires a paid parking tag ($5 daily / $15 weekly / $40 annual).
When is the best time to visit the Smokies?
Late April-May for wildflowers and cooler weather; mid-October for the country's most photographed fall foliage (book 6+ months ahead). July-August are hot and busy; December-February are quiet and Clingmans Dome road closes.

How do I see bears and elk in the park?

Can I hike to Mount LeConte and stay overnight?
Yes — LeConte Lodge is the only in-park lodging, reachable only by trail. Rooms are allocated by a monthly lottery and book out 12+ months ahead. If you can't get a lodge bed, the Alum Cave Trail up-and-back is the classic day hike.
