Best Hotels in Cinque Terre: 15 Village Stays
The five villages of the Cinque Terre are Italy's most photographed stretch of coast and the best-preserved UNESCO fishing hamlets in the Mediterranean. Real hotel inventory is small — most stays are guesthouses and B&Bs — so knowing which village to pick as your base matters more here than almost anywhere else. Which of the five villages to stay in
Monterosso al Mare: the largest, only village with a proper sand beach (Fegina Beach), the widest hotel choice, and the easiest arrivals with heavy luggage. Best first-timer base.
Vernazza: the postcard harbour — small piazza, colourful facades and the region's best waterfront restaurants. Limited hotel inventory, most stays are guesthouses.
Corniglia: the only village not on the sea — 382 steps or a shuttle bus from the train station up to the village. Highest, quietest, no marina, no beach.
Manarola: the sunset-photo village — small, romantic, best evening ambience. Modest guesthouse inventory.
Riomaggiore: largest of the four southern villages, most guesthouses, closest to La Spezia, easy train arrival.
How the Cinque Terre actually works
Cars are banned in all five villages — do not drive here. Park in La Spezia, Levanto or Monterosso and take the local train.
Trenitalia's Cinque Terre local train runs every 15-30 minutes between all five villages and connects to La Spezia and Levanto. The whole route takes 20 minutes end to end.
The Cinque Terre Card (unlimited trains + Sentiero Azzurro hike) is worth it from two travel days onward. Buy at any village station.
Ferry runs May-October between Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore (Corniglia has no port) — the best photo approach to each village.
The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) is the classic coastal hike linking the villages — sections between Corniglia-Vernazza and Vernazza-Monterosso are the most rewarding. Check open status before travel; landslides close sections regularly.
Getting there and around
Fly Pisa (PSA) or Genoa (GOA). Pisa is 90 minutes by train to La Spezia via Viareggio; Genoa is 90 minutes to Levanto or Monterosso direct.
Milan Malpensa is workable — 3.5 hours by train via Genoa. Not a first-choice arrival airport.
La Spezia Centrale is the true gateway station — every Cinque Terre local train starts here. Change from an intercity train and step onto the local.
Pre-book a Kiwitaxi private transfer only for La Spezia arrival with heavy luggage. The taxi drops you at the village train station or the highest-accessible drop-off; a porter meets you (arranged by the hotel).
When to go and where to eat
May, early June and September-early October: the sweet spot — warm sea, still-open trails, no August crowds.
July-August: hot, packed with day-tripping cruise crowds by 10am and quiet again after 6pm. Stay overnight to experience the villages after the day-tripper wave leaves.
November-March: many restaurants close, ferries stop, some Sentiero Azzurro sections shut for winter maintenance — a quieter, moody but limited visit.
Local specialities: pesto genovese, trofie al pesto, acciughe di Monterosso (salted anchovies), sciacchetrà dessert wine, focaccia con formaggio (a Ligurian speciality worth planning around).
