Where to stay in Hanoi
Old Quarter: the walkable heart — 36 medieval trade streets, Hoan Kiem Lake, water-puppet theatre. Loud and lively; pick a hotel on a quieter side street with double glazing.

Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay — the cruise decision
Ha Long Bay (central) is the postcard — 1,600 limestone karsts, UNESCO listed. Downside: 500+ cruise boats packed into a small area, murky water, aggressive floating vendors.
Lan Ha Bay (south of Ha Long, near Cat Ba island) has the same karst geology, a fraction of the boats, cleaner water for swimming and kayaking. This is where you actually want to go.
2-day/1-night is the minimum honest cruise; 3-day/2-night is the sweet spot — you get to sail deeper into the bay and skip the day-tripper anchor points.
Book a smaller boat (12-24 cabins) — Bhaya, Paradise Elegance, Orchid Cruises for mid-luxury; Heritage Bình Chuẩn for design; Emperor Cruises Legacy Halong for ultra-luxury.
Include seaplane / speedboat transfer options — the shuttle bus from Hanoi is 3h30 each way, a speedboat from Tuan Chau saves 90 min.
Sapa and Ninh Binh — the two best extensions
Ninh Binh (2 nights, 90 min south of Hanoi): the 'Ha Long Bay on land' — Trang An sampan ride, Mua Cave viewpoint, Bich Dong Pagoda. Add a Tam Coc rice paddy stay at Tam Coc Garden Resort.
Sapa (2-3 nights, 6h north on the sleeper train or 5h by expressway car): terraced rice paddies, Hmong and Dao ethnic-minority villages, Fansipan mountain cable-car. Skip the town itself, stay in Ta Van or Lao Chai valleys at Topas Ecolodge.
Getting in and around
Noi Bai International (HAN) is 30 km / 45 min from the Old Quarter. Pre-book a Kiwitaxi transfer — the airport taxi ranks are the most-scammed touch-point in Vietnam.
Ha Long Bay: 2h30 by the new expressway; most cruises include a private-transfer shuttle in the fare.
Reunification Express train south: iconic but slow. Take the 2h flight to HCMC instead unless the train IS the point.
