District 1: the tourist and business heart — Ben Thanh Market, Notre Dame, Central Post Office, the Reunification Palace, rooftop bars. Base here for a first visit.

District 3: quieter, café-culture, the War Remnants Museum, tree-lined avenues. Best for a longer stay or a repeat visit.

Thao Dien (District 2): 15 min from D1 by taxi — the leafy expat district with better restaurants, cocktail bars and boutique hotels. Best for slow-travel and remote-working stopovers.

District 5 (Cholon / Chinatown): local temples, wholesale markets, best banh mi and pho — day-visit not stay.

Cu Chi is 70 km from central Saigon. Public group tours cost USD 15-25 but take 4h+ each way in traffic with 40 people; skip them.

Private car + English-speaking guide via GetYourGuide: USD 60-90/person, half-day, home by lunch. Choose the Ben Duoc tunnels (further, quieter, more authentic) over Ben Dinh (closer, over-run).

Speedboat option: 90 min each way — pricier but comfortable and scenic.

Day 1 — private car HCMC → Ben Tre (2h). Coconut candy workshops, sampan through the palm canals, lunch at a homestay, afternoon cycle through rice paddies. Overnight at Mekong Rustic or an eco-lodge.

Day 2 — early transfer to Can Tho (3h). Sunset street food on Ninh Kieu wharf, cocktails at Iris Rooftop.

Day 3 — 05:30 boat to Cai Rang floating market (arrive before 07:30 or it's over), rice-noodle factory tour, back to Can Tho, drive or 45-min flight back to HCMC.

Skip the 1-day Mekong bus tours — they show you a fake floating market at My Tho with 300 other tourists and no delta atmosphere.

Tan Son Nhat International (SGN) is 8 km from D1. Pre-book a Kiwitaxi transfer (25-45 min depending on traffic) — the airport taxi rank is a common scam target.

In the city: Grab (rideshare) is cheap and safe. Motorbike-taxi Grab is fastest in gridlock but only if you're comfortable pillion.

To Hanoi: 2h domestic flight (Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, Bamboo). To Siem Reap: 1h30 direct.
